| ANNIVERSARY Wednesday, the day after Valentine's Day, will mark the one year date of the loss of my wife. It's been a year of loss, growth and renewal for me and the family. Doesn't seem like a year has passed and then it seems like so long ago all at the same time. We live and we die, it's all a part of God's plan. That much should not remain a mystery to us. Death is as much a part of life as being born. I think the hardest part for me has been to figure out how to fit the lessons she taught me, the things we experienced, the things we planned, into the rest of my life. Unlike a lot of folks, we had no detailed long range plans. We tried to get through the day, the week, the month and to do it with joy. On Valentine's Day, we got word that our youngest daughter had arrived safely in Germany after a year of war in Iraq. Karen lived long enough to eat ice cream with the grandkids, play one last hand of cards with her Thursday night poker buddies, take a chauffeured shopping trip with her real estate past and to say goodbye to her family and friends. When she'd heard our soldier was safely out of harm's way and had one last look at her beloved garden, it was time to go. One year later I offer the same advice to anyone who's interested. If you love someone, show it. It might be the last thing you get to do. (For those of you who may have lost a loved one I highly recommend grief counseling. You don't have to go through it alone.)
