2001 - REILEY

NEW WEEK What's new this week? Well for me I'm another year older and we have a new president. (Unless of course the final tally isn't in yet). Other than that things are fairly normal. I am writing this before the election so I don't know how it turned out but I think it's safe to say that nearly half of us are terrified of the other half and yet we all have to live together. Comments I've heard the last few days go something like this: 'If that man is elected I'm buying more guns and movin' to Wyoming'. 'If he gets elected the whole world is doomed and I'm going to move to Mexico and hide out in the mountains.' The sentiment seems to be from both camps that the 'other' candidate is the worst thing that could ever happen to this country, period. I hope neither turns out to be right. The hopeful aspect is that seldom are our worst fears realized. In fact the older I get the more I realize that most of my fears are unfounded and don't come to pass. And that the things most harmful to us are the things we say and do. Or the things we've left unsaid and undone. Personal responsibility is something most of us could do a better job of. Good democracy demands that we educate ourselves about the issues, not simply from party issued political tracts, forwarded junk email and propaganda but sources closer to the facts. (Perhaps inattention to that detail has helped us arrive at this juncture). I've received enough junk mail from political candidates over the last few weeks to float a battle ship and that makes me angry. I voted against those who sent me the most junk. I want it stopped. Was this in my best interest? I don't know but I felt like I ran out of options. It certainly wasn't a responsible act nor one that I'm necessarily proud of. The dust will soon settle, the rhetoric will take a different direction and we will be on our way to another time, another place, another day. Perhaps someday we Americans will be able to look at one another without suspicion or dread. I hope it's soon. In the mean time our lives go on and there is much work to be done. Perhaps we can begin to work on this nation's issues with clarity and focus. Determined to make things better and to leave them in better shape for the future. Many of us won't be here to see too far into the the future but it will certainly make us rest easier to think that there will be one. Reiley
